If you are starting a photography career then you should be careful about some common issues like large studio space for fashion photography, lights, equipment and uninterrupted power supply. When I started my photography business 20 years back then I had faced the same problems and then I found the solutions for my problems. You may try my following suggestions if you like:
When we start photography business as a freelancer or a professional company then we look for a space suitable to our budget. We sometime commit a mistake in choosing the right place. We must think about that many people will visit your studio and if your studio is not approachable, far from city, far from Metro Station then Models, Make-up Artists, Fashion Stylists, Dress Suppliers, Technicians, Photographers, Assistants and most important your Clients will hesitate to come to your place. You must think about the convenience of all concerned people before starting your studio. You may be happy that you have started your studio at a cheaper or free place but this might not be a good idea because of which you might lose your clients and big business opportunities no matter how valuable connections you have. You should be at a place where all love to visit your place. I can understand that it is not easy for everyone to get a place on rent at a prime area. You may collaborate with your fellow photographers or like minded friends who also want to start business so that you can start your photography business at an easily approachable place and it will be better if the place has free and easy parking facility.
Studio Space is also very important factor in fashion or ecommerce photography. You can not shoot with a small team along with your client. There might be 6 to 12 persons in ecommerce shoot like photographer, light assistant, make-up artist, stylist, models, ironing helper and 2-3 persons from your client side. You need a place where floor size should not be less than 20′ length, 15′ width and 10′ height. The studio size should have make-up and changing room area. You need a place to keep products also. This type of space is good for small quantity shoot but if you are shooting bigger quantity like 50+ and products like sarees then you will need a bigger place. If the ceiling height is less than 10 feet then you will face big lighting problem because the height of model with heels is more than 6 feet and parabolic soft box is more than 4′ so there will not much distance left between model and light. Think about it when you plan for a studio.
When I started my photography studio then I was confident that three flash lights with soft boxes are more than enough but soon I realized that three lights are not enough. We do not get lights in the market easily and we do not have time to send someone to Chandni Chowk, Gautam Nagar in Delhi for buying lights. We always need backup lights in case of emergency.
We can not always shoot on gray or white background. Sometimes you will get a request from your client to shoot on different color background. I know this is not easy to change background or having many color backgrounds.
I have recently shifted to Gurugram from Delhi and started Studio Krantz near Galleria Market, Behind Cross Point Mall, Sector 28, Gurugram-1122002. This studio has two floors for large and medium shoots. The size of Studio-1 is 30’x24′ and ceiling height is 11′ which is suitable for fashion, pre wedding, maternity, matrimony, kids photography and videography. The size of Studio-2 is 26’x20′ and ceiling height is 11′ which is suitable for ecommerce product and fashion photography, corporate head shot and any kind of small shoot. Our studio is available on full day, half day, hourly rent basis. Since I have faced many problems during shoots which is why I have selected this prime area of Gurugram near to Iffco Metro Station, motorized backdrop systems, free parking and many more facilities.
